Is pourtsmouth a safe area in UK?

I am moving to pourtsmouth in UK, I have a kid. I am moving to near bunch of council estates. I heard pourtsmouth is full of chavs, chavy liberated area full of council estates. I am scared to go there, shall I let my son go to school by himself? I heard in Pourtsmouth, alot of robbery happens. If you have lived in pourtsmouth, how is it?
