How can I make my son's first haircut as little as emotionally damaging as possible for the both of us?

My 14 month old son's hair is beginning to get in his eyes and gets really dirty every day because he loves to rub his hands in his hair while he's eating. My husband and I are dragging our feet about cutting his hair because we know how much he hates sitting still. Yes, we are cheap and will cut it ourselves. We are building a house out of pocket and can't afford a professional haircut (there are no cheap barbers in our town anyways). My son hates to have his hands and face washed, I can't imagine cutting his hair. Any tips that will make it easier on all involved?
