Hinduism : Who is the one getting liberated; the mind or the soul?
Soul. Mind is only a sum total of the data collected and imilated by the five senses. The soul is nirvikara and nirakara only in its pure state and at that state only it is liberated. Weight comes with earth and impurity. Earth is the lowest element, and when there is earth enveloping the soul, or earth or impurity within the soul including liquid (water) and Air and fire which are heavier than Ether and does not have attraction(gravitation) with cosmic ether(cosmic consciousness) it cannot go upwards and stay within the gravitational pull of the Earth. In that state the movement of the soul liberated from the body after deceased body, have a zig zag or up and down movement and do not have any proper trajectory. The reason why a person meditating feels tremor or the jumping propulsions in those who sit in certain postures like padmasana meditating for long time with pranayama, explains this. The soul is within every cells of the body in its subtle form of Ether. And when they are brought together by any methods like meditation etc. it will roll up like a ball and go up and down in such a way that the body will be pushed up when it goes up because ether is lighter than air, and it will be pulled down due to the gravitation of earth when it comes down giving a jumping motion to the yogin. It is only when it is pure state that it can escape the Earth's gravitational field and join with the Source because of the powerful attraction they can exchange between each other in their pure states. The purity comes from removing the impurities. In spiritual terms the impurities are Sins or effects of the actions. And therefore the and thereafter the liberation.
